Official Ornament: Major General Andrew Jackson.
Babcock Center Foundation proudly presents the 2007
“Official City Ornament.”
This year’s ornament is in recognition of Fort Jackson and
depicts a statue of Major General Andrew Jackson, the fort’s namesake, a
native son of the Palmetto State and the seventh president of the United
States.
Fort Jackson
and the city of Columbia share a long tradition of respect, cooperation
and friendship. The initial
site of the installation consisted of 1,200 acres that were donated by the
citizens of Columbia to the federal government for the purpose of building
a fort. In 1967, the citizens
of Columbia presented the statue of Major General Andrew Jackson that
stands at Gate # 1 to Fort Jackson in recognition of the Fort’s 50th
anniversary. In addition, Fort
Jackson was incorporated into the city of Columbia in October 1968.
“Fort
Jackson” is the fifteenth in a Collector’s Series of holiday
ornaments, all featuring historic sites and points of interest in
Columbia, the Capital of South Carolina. Previous ornaments in the series
are still available, though numbers are limited. Full sets are available for
$132, plus
shipping.
